3 Safety Features For Pedestrian Crossings

Posted on

If you live in a neighborhood that sees a lot of traffic, you want to make sure that your residents are safe. One way to do that is to make sure that there are pedestrian crossings set up in the neighborhood. If you are part of a homeowners' association, your HOA may be able to set up some crossings, or you may have to go to the city to petition them to set up crossings. It depends on your city, what you are looking for, and other things. If you are going to put up safe places for pedestrian crossings, there are a number of features that you can add to the crossings.

Warning Lights

One thing you can do is look into getting warning lights that are set a little distance out from the crossing. These lights are attached to a sensor that will read when someone is in the crosswalk and trigger the lights to go off. Those lights will then warn drivers and let them know that they need to pay attention to the crosswalk. This can be especially good in poor weather or when the lighting is less than optimal. A flashing light can be really hard to miss.

Rumble Strips

Another part of any crossing system that you can use in your neighborhood is rumble strips. You see these strips on the sides of highway; if you go over them, they cause your car to make noise and shake to alert you to the fact that you have gone over the side. These strips can also be installed on the road near any crossing. Going over the strips will let the drivers know that there is a crossing that is coming up and that they should slow down.

Reflective Signs

You can also have reflective signs set up near the crosswalks. This is just another way for the drivers to see what's going on, as well as a way to let the pedestrians know where they should safely cross. The sign could be set up with a smaller sign underneath it saying how far away the crossing is from the point where the sign is placed.

If you are worried about the people who live and walk in your neighborhood, it's important to make sure that you do what you can to make sure they are safe. If you have a homeowners' association, you may be able to set up pedestrian crossings in your area, or you can petition the city to ask for them to be set up.
